Usually...: The most common problem is "sialoadenitis" where the gland gets blocked up, and becomes painful and swollen. Dehydration is a common cause. This can be initially treated with hot compresses, good hydration (lots of water) and sour foods/liquids taken 5-10x/day (vinegar, lemon juice, sour candies, etc). Many: Depends on the disorder. Causes can be radiation, a stone in the gland, infection, presence of a tumor or cyst in the gland. There are autoimmune diseases like, sjogren's syndrome that can affect the glands. Consult with your doctor.
