Better choices: Chlorpromazine (thorazine) was used primarily as an anti-psychotic. In some countries it's still used for severe itching, but many anticholinergic side effects limit its use. Otc Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (oral or topical) or zyrtec are both good. H2 antagonists like zantac/axid/ Pepcid also work because they act on a different receptor than benadryl/zyrtec. Topical steroids can soothe itching.
