Yes: Herpes is a virus that causes cold sores around your mouth. There is another herpes virus that causes genital infection, but you cannot catch that from Chapstick or eating after them. You can catch the oral virus by eating or drinking after someone, using their Chapstick, or kissing them. They are most contagious when they have lesions, but some virus can be present before they break out.

Herpes: Yes and No. Most people get oral herpes as children from other family members. 75% of Americans have this virus. Before you worry about others giving this to you you must get a blood test to see if you already have it. Herpes contagiousness has no correlation between them having sores or not. So, yes, eating off utensils from other people is a way to get herpes.
