A 38-year-old male asked:
can you have akf with a 1.65 creatinine level?

Creatinine level: Is a marker of kidney function and the normal level depends on the body muscle mass (weight),gender (higher in men than women),race (higher in african americans than others),and age (higher in older ages). So 1.65 may be a normal level for a tall muscular african american old man but maybe vey abnormal for a short tiny young Asian! Ask your doctor what eGFR this creatinine translates to for you!

A 34-year-old member asked:
My creatinine value is abnormal, what types of medicine will improve it?

Dr. Jesse Mills answered

Depends: Need to know if level is high from poor blood flow to kidney (pre-renal), intrinsic kidney trouble (intra-renal) or blockage (post-renal). Most common kidney problems in us are from high blood pressure and diabetes. Control those diseases and creatinine should behave itself.

A 33-year-old male asked:
How to reduce the level of creatinine for a patient who is diatebetic for more than 30yrs and what is the normal value ?

Diabetes and creatin: Normal level of creatinine in blood is 0.6 to 1.2mgmdiabetes effects kidneys if the diabetes is not well controlled, and causes elevation of creatonine level. It is very difficult to reduce the level, but if you control biabetes and keep BP normal you can prevent it from getting worse, if it is too high over six then dialysis may be indicated and will bring the level down.

Meaning of bun/creatinine ratio?

Dr. Peter Kurzweil answered

Defines kidney prob: Bun=blood urea nitrogen, byproduct of proteins ingested, if rise to high levels due to kidney problem, can cause toxic affects on the body.
Creatinine= measurement of renal function. Normal bun/cr ratio about 10. The higher that ratio, the more likely it is not intrinsic kidney disease per se, but reduction in blood flow or volume to kidney, like when on strong diuretic-prerenal-reversible.

What do you do when your creatinine level is elevated?

ELEVATED CREATININE: If in blood you find that the creatinine level is elevated you try to find the cause of the abnormal test.It can be elevated due to dehydration you correct that by fluids .If it is elevated due to obtruction to the passage of urine correct that it comes down. But if is due to chronic condition like diabetes or high bp, then you try to control these to prevent further rise.If goes over 6dialysis.

A 40-year-old member asked:
On a metabolic workup, what does a low bun/creatinine ratio reading mean?
1 doctor answer • 3 doctors weighed in

Dr. Peter Kurzweil answered
Internal Medicine 50 years experience
Maybe, kidney diseas: In prior answers, explained bun, creatinine, normal ratio, and high ratio. Low ratio means that the BUN is likely low or normal with relation to the creatinine, indicating that there is adequate blood or volume flowing to the kidneys, but the kidneys are impaired or disease in some way. Need a nephrologist - kidney specialist.
