Possible hernia: A painful mass above the belly button could possibly be ventral hernia. Ventral hernias occur when structures in the abdominal wall weaken and can no longer prevent protrusion of the abdominal contents through the defect. A surgeon or a primary care physician ( such as a GP or OB/gyn) can evaluate for this.
