Routine check-ups: For most adults, as long as they brush and floss properly every day and limit their intake of foods and liquids high in unrefined sugars, sticky starches and acids, once every six months is sufficient. If they have gum problems, get a cleaning every 3 months. However, one should not rely on professional dental care to make up for neglect.

Professional exam: Recommendation is once every 6 months. If your Dentist notes a problem, he/she may recommend more frequent intervals. For most people, with a healthy mouth, once every 6 months is optimum.
