Why do you have to stop metformin before surgery?

To avoid problem: Metformin is stopped before surgery to avoid hypoglycemia since the patient is not on food (NPO). Also, to avoid kidney problems as well. Although the stress of surgery can elevate blood sugar however, this can be handled easily by insulin.
