Conjunctivits: discharge or eyes sticking shut are symptoms of conjunctivitis. This can be allergic, bacterial, viral or irritant related. A 3 week old would be hard to diagnose without an exam so many would use an antibiotic eye drop in case it is a bacterial infection which is usually the most severe. Sometimes it is a sign of chlamydia that could lead to pneumonia if not treated properly. Get her seen.

3 wk baby sticky eye: 1st congrats on your niece! She is quite young and the 1st thing to do before seeing her Pediatrician is using a clean wash cloth with warm water and clean her eyes. Massage the area near her tear duct (corner nearest her nose) 3-4 times a day. Because of her age she needs to be seen by her doctor right away. If she develops fever Temp>100.4 (Fahrenheit or 39 Celsius) go to the ER ASAP!

Tear duct immaturity: Many infants have a slight mucous discharge in one or both eyes in the neonatal period. The most common cause of this is incomplete development of the year drainage system. This will usually disappear by 6 weeks. You should wipe the external area around the eye with warm wash cloth daily. You can also gently massage in a circle the inner corner of the eye near the nasal bridge 5-10 seconds a day.
