Neither one: 99% of spotting before or after a period is breakthrough bleeding. Before the period it's usually Progesterone breakthrough, after it's more likely estrogen breakthrough, but combinations are possible. A missed period is a sign of pregnancy nothing else is, "implantation bleeding" is mostly a myth.
