A member asked:

Diagnosed w gallstones thru ultrasound but now ordered for hida scan? is it true that this scan could cause severe gallbladder attack or move stones?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maybe: A HIDA scan evaluates the function of the GB. During a HIDA scan you are given a medication that will cause your GB to contract and that can sometimes cause discomfort. Also the Ensure that you are asked to drink can also precipitate some RUQ discomfort. As far as a full fledged GB attack, that is unlikely. It definatley does not cause more stones. Talk to the physician who ordered the scan.
