A member asked:

Does nicotine relieve psychiatric conditions temporarily?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes, in smokers: A very high percentage of people with schizophrenia and other thought disorders are smokers, some of them chain-smokers who may smoke 3-5 packs per day. Because of this, some people have tried using nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum, lozenges etc.) as a medication, with some success. This is also true, to a lesser extent, with people with depression and anxiety disorders.
