It depends...: Vigorous sexual activity can cause irritation to the vaginal walls or cervix and result in spotting. If persistent, considerations include: infections, abnormal cervical cells-dyslasia, endocrine (thyroid, etc.). The most important next step is to get an examination with testing for vaginal infections, STIs, a Pap smear, and pregnancy. Also, if birth control pills are skipped, spotting can occur.
