doctors, what is the difference between menstrual period and spotting?

Depends: Menstral period is the time that the period is due. The length of flow and heaviness varies for the same person and between women. Spotting means just a tiny bit of blood nota flow and can be present during a menstrual period or at other times as well

A 48-year-old member asked:
Why I am having longer than usual menstrual period? Is extended spotting a problem?

Hormones: Any changes in your normal menstrual period can be related to hormones. If you are concerned, you should get your hormone levels checked. Spotting can be from multiple causes, cervical infection, polyp, fibroids or it could be normal for you. Again, if you are concerned you should go in to get checked.
