Test & treatment: If not done already, a nuclear medicine is usually the next step (unless pregnant). This involves swallowing a small dose of radioactive iodine (RAI) & returning 4-6 hours later, and again 24 hours later, to measure how much of the RAI got into the thyroid. This is usually combined with a scan to give a 2D image of where within the thyroid the RAI went - all over (Graves), 1 spot(toxic nodule)
