Preschool age: Generally stuttering occurs about age 3-4 years, and is not too worrisome-most children do it to some extent. If it doesn't self correct by 6-7 years, or involves prolonged repetition or repetition of one sound, if there are long pauses in speech or if it really seems to upset the child or there are unusual behaviors to compensate, then treatment is needed.
