It seems that an automatic wrist blood pressure monitor is not favored by many md's. can it still produce reliable results when properly used?

No: No you should not use it. It is too variable based on your cardiovascular health and other factors. Wrist cuffs should not be used at all. They are never used on adults in hospitals. Buy a better cuff - one that goes around your upper arm.
