B12: Your doc probably wants to build up your B12 stores. But, if your levels are normal it may not really be necessary. As to why they were low, lots of possibilities. Vegetarians are at risk because of dietary deficiency, excess alcohol, Crohn's/ GI diseases including intestinal parasites, long term use of acid reducing drugs like Zantac (ranitidine).
