Rise and fall: Simply put, estrogen rises after the period is finished x 14 days and if ovulation occurs then progesterone is added to the recipe for another 14 or so days. A couple of days before a menstrual period is due, Mother Nature "turns off the oven" and both hormone levels fall resulting in a period.
