Yes: When endurance type activities are done, cells use primarily aerobic metabolism which can be kept up for longer periods of time. When particularly rigorous exercise is done, the cells use anaerobic metabolism which produces a burst of energy at the expense of producing lactic acid and able to be sustained for a shorter time.
