Sore throat...: Possible causes of frequent on and off sore throat are post nasal drip, sinus congestion, acid reflux, thyroid gland enlargement among others. An infection can definitely cause sore throat but it is unlikely to behave that way, giving symptoms frequently and on an on and off basis. When it is an infection symptoms usually persist until the infection has cleared on its own or after treatment.
