Terminology issue: For birth defects think of things like a cleft palate or open spine defect. Terminology is important for communicating ideas. There are both inherited and pregnancy issues that can contribute to ADHD and these are present in the newly born, but so are the basic factors needed to become a professional athlete.

ADHD is not a defect: ADHD is not considered a birth defect. It is a variation in brain anatomy and chemistry that is actually fairly common. Many people with ADHD have relatives who also have it and a genetic link has been found in many cases.
