Depends on the: Nature of the break. Some bones may be comminuted and in multiple pieces, location is important as well, some anatomical locations will take longer to heal I.e jones fracture of fifth metatarsal with no treatment likely will take longer......I would advise proper treatment.
Dr. Janiece Stewart
Sports Medicine 20 years experience
On average 6-8 weeks: There are several factors that can affect healing a broken bone...severity of the break, bone that is broken, existing medical problems and how controlled they are (ie diabetes, thyroid disease, osteopenia, osteoporosis, low vitamin D, etc.), as well as smoking history. On average, it takes a simple fracture 6-8 weeks to heal. Sometimes longer if any of the above listed conditions exist.

Do babies with fused bones in their skull need surgery?

Dr. Michael Amster
Specializes in Pediatrics
No: This answer depends on the amount of fusion, the location, and the bones involved. There are some genetic disorders that lend to large fusions, creating very abnormal skulls. Crouzon's disease is one such disorder. If fusion is detected or found on imaging, immediate follow up with a neurosurgeon and geneticist is required to help make that decision.

My practitioner told me the pain i'm currently having is due to my pubic bone separating. How can I alleviate this pain?

Not much: The pubic bone commonly stretches before pregnancy. Thank goodness otherwise no one would come out vaginally. Some women have an excess separation after birth that can cause difficulty walking. Rest and time are really the only things that will lead to it healing.

How does the bone density test define osteoporosis?

2 doctor answers7 doctors weighed in
Dr. James Chu
Endocrinology 25 years experience
Only partly: The DEXA scan gives the bone mineral density at the hips, spine and forearm. These scores can predict osteoporosis: 't-score' of less than -2.5 is considered osteoporosis. However, many people suffer osteoporosis fractures despite having better bone densities. So, we also use other factors: age, ethnicity, size, family history, prior fractures, smoking, alcohol, other conditions to predict risks.
Dr. William Banks Hinshaw
Obstetrics and Gynecology 43 years experience
In fact, in the one-year NORA study, only 18% of the women having fragility fractures met the T-score definition of osteoporosis.

Will my insurance cover a bone density test?

Dr. John Stork

Maybe: Depends on your insurance. For postmenopausal women a bone density test can be an important part of preventive care. If your insurance covers preventive care, such a test may be included.

How do wrist fractures occur in people with osteoporosis?

Dr. Frederick Buechel, jr. md
Orthopedic Surgery 26 years experience
With less energy: It takes less energy from falls to cause a wrist fracture in an osteoporotic person. Also, the fractures can be more "smashed" into pieces with ostoeporosis.
