A member asked:

Can i take benadryl (diphenhydramine) to relieve serious allergies (sneezing, running nose, etc) and xanax?

Depends: It depends what your tolerance to xanax and other sedative medications is. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an excellent medication to treat allergies, however it has a calming/sedating side effect similar to xanax. Some patients may tolerate a combination of these medications. Other people may become somnolent or even confused. You should only combine these medications after speaking with your doctor.

Ask provider, but yes: It should be okay, but do talk w/ your provider since they can interact to increase dizziness and drowsiness risks. Perhaps your provider will offer an alternative or tell you a good schedule to take them on. Take care - allergies can be rough, I know. Also consider non-drug therapy for anxiety if possible. CBT can really help. And, no side efx!
