Needs evaluation: Cracking or popping can be nothing more than a tendon moving over a prominence. Sprains are notorious for taking a very long time to heal. I would strongly suggest an evaluation by a foot/ankle specialist. MRI may be needed as well as further rest.

Joint Sublimation: Actually, the cracking noise is caused by sublimation, or transition between fluid and gas states that occurs as the synovial fluid becomes less viscous with chronic joint arthritis. Pressure builds on one side of the joint, and tiny gas bubbles pop out on the low pressure side. It is an indication of joint inflammation and should be examined by a specialist if there is accompanying pain.
