How old is patient?: Could be thrush, especially if it is on a baby's tongue. Adults who are immunocompromised with certain illnesses or on certain medicines can get thrush too. It could be something call geographic tongue or benign migratory glossitis, which is nothing to worry about. Better to get it checked out.

Quite common: Thrush is usually not furry in appearance but rather pure white smooth patches with mild red rims..Sore if scraped off. Often when you are having some minor illness such as a cold etc..You may experience/see the whitish coating on your tongue, often because of food substance attaching to elongated papillae. Usually gone in few days. U can scrape off without pain. If this is not so, consult doc...
