Serotonin, Sort of: Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors like Fluoxetine are often effective in treating chronic headaches in part because Serotonin is depleted in most forms of chronic pain, such as headaches. A reuptake inhibitor allows the existing Serotonin to do more work. Serotonin is needed in the "ascending pain pathway" - the pain you feel from anywhere on/in your body.
