Stiffen & load joint: Think of your knee as a great example. Both the quadriceps and hamstring span across the knee joint. If you contract both the quadricep (extensor) and hamstring muscles (flexor), your essentially lock your knee in a fixed position or at least significantly increase the load felt across your knee joint throughout an active arc of motion.
