You bleed: Although some bleeding is usual after a traumatic puncture or laceration, the way to identify if you damaged a big vessel is by the amount of bleeding and the difficulty in stopping the bleeding. If you damaged a vein you would see that blood flow is continuous while if you damaged an artery the blood flow would be pulsatile.
