A member asked:

Can you tell me how the white blood cell knows when to destroy/kill red blood cell?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Old and antibody: coated. It is not the circulating white cells that destroy red cells but reticuloendothelial cells in spleen and liver do. Old red cells and red cells coated with antibody or complement are destroyed by these cells. These cells have receptors for antibody, complement and changes in membrane due to aging.
