Blood & imaging: Depending on the level of suspicion for a blood clot an ER physician would order blood tests (such as D-dimers) to determine the likelihood for a patient to have a blood clot; depending on the results of the exam the ER physician would then order an appropriate imaging study such as an ultrasound or CT-scan.
