Can you tell me how the hormone, secretin, protect the small intestine ?

Secretin has: many actions and works in combination with other gi hormones. It stimulates bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) and limits acid secretion, so I guess in some small way it "protects" the small intestine, but that's not it's major function.
