Soon after birth: Babies start with cooing in the early months, and begin making consonant sounds around 7-9 months. By 10 months, there may be mama/ dada, and by 12 mo a couple words are thrown in (hi, bye, night night, uh oh, etc). By 15 months, children should be able to say mama, dada, and 1-3 words. By 18 months, 6-10 words. Some speak more, some earlier. Some say one word and then nothing for several days.
