Define "trigger": T1DM is a process that emerges after a period of time when the body looses its ability to make insulin. The apparent mechanism involves destruction of insulin producing cells by auto-immune antibodies. The source of those antibodies is illusive but thought to include enteroviral infections. The disease often presents after a triggering illness, but could be diagnosed earlier by specific tests.
