Lateral ankle instab: Lateral ankle instability is caused by frequent sprains of the ankle or by genetic inheritance. The hallmark signs are looseness or popping of the ankle, frequently rolled ankles, and ankle pain on over the side of the ankle nearest the baby toe. The instability leads to greater ankle injury and pain. It needs to be surgically corrected when severe and frequent.
