A member asked:

Can you tell me how to forgive my brother for years of verbal abuse?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Resolve to do so: Forgiveness is a conscious decision not to take revenge, but rather to act as if bad things had not happened. You cannot make yourself love anybody. You do not have to be with him if it is not mutually enjoyable and your lives have gone different directions. You may or may not tell him that you have forgiven him. You may feel a great sense of relief. And you do not have to put up with abuse.
