Tooth infection: If you have a tooth infection it can cause pain and swelling of part of the face. While you need to see your dentist to evaluate a tooth infection and prescribe antibiotics, Tylenol (acetaminophen) or over the counter Ibuprofen can temporarily reduce pain and swelling. This is only a temporary treatment and your dentist will need to see you within the next couple of days.

Emergency: If your swelling is that large, you need to be seen immediately by a dentist, or at a minimum in the ER. Antibiotics need to be started at once, the swelling may need to be drained. Do not delay, it can spread rapidly and affect other parts of your body.

See a dentist: A tooth infection won't go away without treatment and the infection may spread to your jaw, cheeks, sinus and to other areas of your head and neck. Visit a dentist ASAP for definitive diagnosis and treatment.
