How could doctors treat people before modern medicine?

Simple stuff: Basic first aid. Surgery without anesthesia or a truly sterile field. Simple meds for some of the common symptoms. A handful of herbal remedies (belladonna, foxglove, opiates). Placebo therapy. If you read the old textbooks, psychotherapy was quite well-developed and insightful. Offering meaning (true or bogus).
