COPD...: Emphysema is a form of COPD. Patients with emphysema can have an increase in their carbon dioxide levels since they can't exhale the carbon dioxide normally. This in turn leads to a decrease in the blood pH. This is compensated by the kidneys by keeping bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) in the blood. The end result is a compensated respiratory acidosis.
