A member asked:

Can you tell me how are stents used in medicine to maintain blood flow. must be detailed?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Stents...: Stents are metallic mesh frames used to prop open any channel. They can be used in blood vessels, airways and intestinal tracts. In the blood vessel they hold an artery open after plaque is ballooned open. Typically after using a balloon, there is a tendency for the artery to recoil allowing the plaque to re-narrow the vessel. A metal stent is used to hold the artery open.
