Embryology 101: Human fertilization occurs most often in the ampullary part of the fallopian tube. The sperm binds to the zona pellucida of the egg (oocyte), the acrosome reaction occurs, which allows the sperm to enter the egg. The haploid sperm nucleus joins the haploid nucleus of the oocyte.
