Rolling it: Having your foot turn inward while your body goes the opposite way is the usual cause of an ankle sprain. Depending on the severity of the sprain, it will need rest, ice, elevation and compression and/or an ankle brace and crutches or a boot. It is important to see a specialist to evaluate which type of sprain you have.

Ankle sprain: An ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments that hold the ankle together. There are 4 ligaments of the ankle that can be injured depending on the direction of the sprain (not to mention the high ankle sprain). Most sprains involve some stretch on the ligament which causes pain and swelling, and will resolve in 4-6 weeks. A sprain that lasts longer should be evaluated with a specialist.
