Rx for HSV outbreak: For recurrent genital HSV2, it's usually most effective to prevent outbreaks with daily valacyclovir (Valtrex) or other anti-HSV drug. Oral herpes outbreaks (HSV1) usually aren't as frequent and can be treated with a single oral dose of valcyclovir. Oral acyclovir or famciclovir also are effective, but their creams or ointments help little. Diet and "natural" remedies like lysine are ineffective.
