A member asked:

What are the consequences of plugging my nose when sneezing? feeling slight lightheadedness, head pressure for 1-week possibly from a sneeze i held.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Do not plug nose: If you sneeze with both of your nostrils plugged, you will force air through the Eustachian tube and create a great deal of positive pressure in your middle ear. Rarely, you could perforate your ear drum. Also this method of blowing your nose can lead to increased intracranial (brain) pressure. Learn to use handkerchief or Kleenex a few mm. away from nose to avoid these potential complications.
