Impregnation: Sperm must be there ready to impregnate an egg when it is released from the ovary. The longer after ovulation sperm reach this location the less likely pregnancy will occur. Sperm are most likely to cause pregnancy if deposited in the vagina BEFORE ovulation then after.

Within 12 hrs: The egg is generally fertilizable for 12 hrs after ovulation. When we do IVF, we can see the signs of ovulation the next morning in the lab. Keep in mind that the actual timing of ovulation (and the fertile period) can vary.
