Vaguely defined lump in calf above inside ankle. been there 8 months, no pain. doctor said it was hypertrophy of muscle. should i worry it's cancer?

Cause calf lump: You could also have a cyst in a soft tissue structure. I doubt cancer here but you could ask your doctor to get an ultrasound or MRI of the lump to further define it's etiology.

Without tissue sampling, we can not be 100% sure, but this is where judgement plays an important role. Talk to your doctor about your concerns. An ultrasound of the area may offer additional information.
