Cause calf lump: You could also have a cyst in a soft tissue structure. I doubt cancer here but you could ask your doctor to get an ultrasound or MRI of the lump to further define it's etiology.

Clinical diagnosis: The doctor' s assessment of your lump is based on clinical grounds: that is, what it feels like on examination, whether it has changes over time, and the most likely causes. Without tissue sampling, we can not be 100% sure, but this is where judgement plays an important role. Talk to your doctor about your concerns. An ultrasound of the area may offer additional information.
