Why do you do this?: Lots of possibility. Position of head relative to trunk to avoid getting cold water on you might cause decreased blood flow to the brain. The best answer is that the cold water gets in ear canal and cools the inner ear on one side at a time created a convection current in the semicircular canals producing vertigo. We are told to flush out our ears with room temperature water to avoid this.
