IBS: Ibs is a syndrome characterized by bowel symptoms (constipation, diarrhea, bloating, pain, etc.) which are related to intake of food or elimination. Other causes of symptoms such as gluten enteropathy, lactose intolerance, intestinal infection, etc must be ruled out.
Dr. Mark Gromisch
Gastroenterology 38 years experience
IBS: Ibs is often a diagnosis of exclusion; meaning other causes such as inflammatory bowel disease have been excluded. It can manifest as abdominal pain with constipation, diarrhea or a combination of both. There are multiple meds that may be helpful. There is a psychological component often where stress or anxiety can exacerbate the symptoms. Often the severity of the symptoms may wax and wane.

Doctor can evaluate: Extreme fatigue by itself is not normal and needs an evaluation. A primary care doctor can look for causes such as anemia, cancer, infections, hormonal imbalances, etc... Significant anemia (not enough blood) or thyroid hormone problems are two of the many possible causes. One can write down a list of symptoms, with a brief description of each, to take to the doctor.

Probably not: Cirrhosis is not usually associated with hair loss.Any time there is a rapid reduction in weight or any kind of illness then we can see hair loss increase for several months. This type of hair loss comes back so not to worry. Good luck on your weight loss.

What causes irritable bowel syndrome and do you have it the rest of your life?

IBS: … is not a disease, as much as an abnormality of the function of your digestive tract. We do not know what causes it, and do not have a "cure" for it. Things that can help include increasing the amount of fiber in your diet and noting whether any particular foods make your symptoms worse, and obviously avoiding those if so. If it is still a problem in your daily life, then you should see your physician to discuss it.
