Valproate Sodium: There is no evidence that valproate sodium decrease fetal IQ. When administered in pregnancy, there is a risk of fetal malformations: spina bifida, epicanthal folds, flat nasal bridge, small upturned nose, long philtrum, and thin upper lip. Less commonly it causes heart defects, oral clefts, genital abnormalities, and limb defects. The risk is 2-5%.
