Is it safe to take codeine when on sodium valproate. had a major seizure last night after taking it.

No interaction: There is really no interaction, however, if your seizures have been under good control until you took the codeine, then I would not risk it again. Anything that depresses the nervous system (brain) can precipitate a seizure.
