See sleep specialist: Anxiolytics such as the benzodiazepines are frequently prescribed for the short-term management of an acute sleep problem. Diazepam, a long-acting benzodiazepine, is often used for insomnia especially when there is comorbid anxiety. An alternative choice is zolpidem (Ambien), which is not classified as an anxiolytic although its pharmacodynamic profile is similar. Tylenol (acetaminophen) pm is not on the list.
